I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round, as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys.  ~Charles Dickens

Attention Parents: There are scholarships for you! [Deadline Feb. 14th]

There has been a big push in recent years to get mom and dads back into the classroom. Part of it has to do with the recession. Obama is banking on the fact that a more educated workforce will be key to a speedy recovery. But most of the impetus is for broader economic reasons. The global economy gets more competitive every day. Inhabitants of the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) have been revolutionizing their workforces by delivering world class educations. Engineering departments at most major US colleges are staffed by students that did their undergraduate work overseas. America isn’t going to stay competitive without a similarly skilled labor pool.

Without further ado I’d like to introduce 2 opportunities for parents:

Scholarship Site of the Decade

You’ve probably heard about this site from your peers or school counselor. The rumors are true. This is the website that catalogs more scholarship programs than anyone else in the world. The information is timely and is always tailored to your personal interests and economic situation. You’ll need a discerning eye to weed out anything that requires too much effort.

FastWeb is 34 million students strong and growing. We’re recommended by more than 16,000 high schools—and for good reason. Last year, one out of three college-bound high school seniors used FastWeb to find money for school and get advice on everything from what major to choose to what to pack for your dorm room.

We’re the leading Internet scholarship search—we’ll help you find a scholarship to pay for school and let you know what to expect when you get there. We can help with college visits, the application process and understanding financial aid.

Best College Survey (3 page application!)

This application is only 3 pages and takes about 2 minutes. I’m not sure what the award amount is. I believe you’re offered different scholarships depending on what your interests/area of study is. This should cull the field quite a bit and give you a better chance to actually receive aid.

We implore you to try this award. Sarah Shermwood of Jacksonville,  FL says:

College is important for young people to achieve success in the real world. By going to college young people will gain experience, etiquette, problem solving skills, and a higher education. Personally, college is important to make a difference in life; become something better. Achieving what others have failed to complete and making a better life for our posterity. Our generation is obligated to make life better and change the way society is functioning. Without a higher education and good experience no one will understand what is needed to be done.

Scholarships for Dads [Deadline February 15th]

This award is for all the fathers out there that want to go back to school. It’s good for community college or a standard 4-year university. The award amount is $10,000. The deadline is February 15th.

College is the doorway to an extensive number of opportunities.  Students determine what they want to do with the rest of their lives depending on what they do in college.  Not only does college provide an academic atmosphere, but it fosters an environment for social interaction with people of many different backgrounds.  Furthermore, universities provide the resources for students to engage in a number of communal activities that benefit society and the environment, including recycling projects, river clean-ups, and spreading global warming awareness.  This makes them an invaluable step to working towards both personal and societal well-being later in life.

Consider becoming a bookkeeper via study at business schools. Bookkeepers handle the financial transactions and record keeping for an organization. In 2004, bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks held more than two million jobs and garnered median annual earnings of $28,570, with the top 10 percent earning more than $43,570. If you’re ready to master such career essentials as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and other specialized accounting software, business schools have your ticket to success.

$10,000 Scholarship

Our first award is a $10k scholarship. The application is extremely short. Winning this award could pay for almost a year of school, especially in-state tuition.

Easy Scholarships for Moms

For mothers who want to go back to school, we have the Scholarships 4 Moms application. It’s easy for any busy mother to apply for.  College is important because it gives the world a chance to better itself with more highly educated citizens. Also, in today’s economy, it is imperative that one has some kind of college degree, otherwise it is close to impossible to achieve any type of career. Many high school students complain about the problems with the world, yet assume that college is not right for them. That may be so for a select few, however if these students realize that college can broaden their horizons and make them money in the future, which is what everybody wants, then maybe they’ll change their mind. More deeply, college helps young people discover themselves, and their interests, thus evolving out of the immature high school stereotype.

Grants for Students [Expired]

Government grants are basically scholarships from Uncle Sam. The problem is that the legal technicalities make it hard for an average person to apply for one. FastGrants is a free service that takes care of all the red tape for you. I know for a fact that there are people at UT with Pell grants. It’s truly amazing because I don’t think these people would be able to afford school otherwise. Even if you don’t usually qualify for financial aid, you should give grants a chance because most people ignore the opportunity.

Whether the student’s goal is science or otherwise, a college degree allows the student to better market themselves. College is more than just completing a major however. College gives the student the opportunity to venture out on their own in a controlled setting. He or she can learn about their own strengths and weaknesses, and what truly is his or her interest. College represents the opportunity to grow in the present and for the future.

Without furthering and deepening our education we cannot improve the planet on which we live.  A college education provides us with the knowledge and skills to accomplish any task. We can contribute to the effort to stop global warming by exploring alternative fuels and finding new and innovative ways to reduce our global and individual carbon footprints.  Together we can solve this problem.
